2 July 2015

Its official – we are now open for the 2015 season!

After a busy summer and autumn getting everything ready, the lifts sprang into action last Saturday and the season was officially underway! The snow gods have smiled on us this year with plenty of pre-opening snow falls – its not often we have such awesome coverage so early in the season and a total contrast to last year at the same time!

Weather for opening day was great but it did deteriorate on Sunday with strong Westerly winds, despite this we kept the Main T Bar open! The week middle of this week has turned on nice weather again and great to see some club members making the most of the slopes before school holidays begin on Saturday. There’s a high chance of a good snow fall tonight and into tomorrow which will be a great boost to the already solid base for the school holidays.

Both school holiday Ski Weeks have strong booking numbers which is great. There are still a few spare beds at various stages during both weeks but we suggest you book now as the phone and emails have been running hot with enquiries! Don’t forget the awesome DBBL packages that are available as well for casual stays during the week and on Saturday nights. Our Saturday night roasts are back and better than ever thanks to our new master chef Will. For more info on accommodation packages / options or to book online Click Here

We hope you will make the most of the epic winter conditions here at Cheeseman so dust off the ski’s or board and get on up here!

11 June – Pre-season snow blankets the base area

Great snow conditions over the entire mountain for opening weekend

Opening day dawns – 27 June

The Staff Team

I’d like to extend a warm welcome the 2015 staff team and hope you will make time to say hi to them when you are visiting the mountain this season. We have a few familiar faces returning along with a number of new ones. This year we have quite a wide mix of nationalities including NZ, Swiss, American, Irish, French, Australian, English and Dutch.

Owen Wilson and I will be heading up the team this year as joint Mountain Managers and we are both excited to be working with such a diverse crew who are shaping up as an excellent team. As always the core staff team are assisted by a number of club volunteers who assist in areas such as patrol, cafe and events.

Weekend Weather

Looks like we have snow coming our way Thursday night and into Friday but should be clear again for Saturday. The wind could also be joining us over the next few days so be sure to check the snow reports for current updates on weather. Dress up warm as its still chilly even when the sun is out!

We have fantastic DBBL rates on offer – $99 / Adult, $79 / Student, $69 / Youth (10 – 17 yrs), $59 / child (under 10) and club members get 30% off these rates. Your weekend stay includes delicious roast dinner on Saturday night, cooked breakfast a tasty lunch and accommodation at Snowline Lodge.

Spectaculatr Sunrises

We’ve been enjoying some stunning sunrises over the past few days – you too can enjoy these with us when you stay at Snowline Lodge

Don’t forget to check the website report for current snow, weather, facility and road conditions – the reports will be updated during the day as and when conditions change.

Please make sure you carry chains with you at all times regardless of whether or not they are needed on the day – conditions can change very quickly in the mountains and we’d hate for you to be caught out! Its a good idea to make sure they fit your vehicle too before leaving town.

We look forward to seeing you up here very soon to enjoy the excellent winter conditions in our little slice of paradise here in the Craigieburn Range.

Cheers Cam & the Cheeseman Crew.

Mountain Update – 4 September

The stunning weather continues up here at Cheeseman with numeruos days of cloudless blue skies and warm temperatures! Whilst it’s hard to complain about the fantastic run of bluebird days there is the downside that the snow is fast disappearing!

The upper mountain is still looking good but the lower slopes and Cat tracks are very thin and with little chance of much snow in the upcoming days (perhaps a little on Sunday night) your time is fast running out to enjoy the end of the winter season. Our scheduled closing is 28 September but we have put  together a revised timeline on a worst case scenario of no more new substancial snow falling as follows:

• Friday 5 Sept. – Sunday 7 Sept: Continued normal operation (including Pirate Party on Saturday – see below)

• Monday 8 – Thursday 11 Sept: The mountain will go on hold to preserve snow.

• Friday 12 – Sunday 14 Sept: Resume operations for the weekend (including Friday) which will include Undie 500 on Saturday and accommodation available at Snowline Lodge Saturday night.

It was great to see a good turn-out for the club champs last Sunday and thanks to our instructors for setting up some interesting courses and also to our club members who assisted on the day.

A few shots from Club Champs held last Sunday

Mountain Update – 21 August

Its been a fantastic week up in the Craigieburn Range with a run of clear and calm weather which has enabled everyone to get on up here and enjoy the fantastic snow at Cheeseman. The weekend was especially stunning and the lifts were running to capacity both days.

Wellington Ski Week is still in full swing up here at Snowline Lodge and everyone has clocked up plenty of skiing and riding this week. We have spaces available on ski weeks through the September / Spring weeks and don’t forget if you ca’n’t do a whole week why not just pop up for a day or two and stay a night on our DBBL accommodation packages – for further info or to book online Click Here.

Cheeseman Is Open

The great news is that we are now open for 2014 – a little late but better late than never!

Sunday 10 August  was locked in as opening day and it dawned clear and fine and just got better and better as the day progressed. Whilst the snow was thin in places the skiing and riding was awesome and there were heaps of smiling faces about the hill. Just on closing the next snow bearing storm front began to roll in with winds increasing – the timing was perfect!

Monday and Wednesday saw us closed whilst the weather system delivered 30cms of new snow over Monday and Tuesday which has transformed the slopes to what they would normally look like this time of year. We opened again yesterday and there were plenty of fresh lines for all to enjoy and there was even a sprinkle of new snow during the late afternoon to keep things fresh.

Wellington Ski Week kicks off this coming Sunday and we are looking forward to welcoming Hilary and the team to Cheeseman for what will be our first proper full ski week for the season. There are beds available at Snowline this weekend but it is filling up so don’t delay in booking. Forest Lodge will only be available for group bookings for the remainder of the season.

The weather is looking excellent for tomorrow and through the weekend so no excuses – get on up here.

Events

Due to the late start of the season we have had to do a complete re-shuffle of events. To check out the current events Calendar please Click Here

The Primary & Intermediate Champs were scheduled to be run on Sunday 24 August but due to the late start to the season and current snowpack conditions we are still making assessments on the race course area and a decision will be made on Sunday 17 August as to whether or not this event will go ahead. If we do run the race it will be Sunday 31 August.

Confirmed Events Coming up:

Wednesday 20 August – Accountants & Lawyers Corporate Day

Wednesday 27 August – Architects & Engineers Corporate Day

Mountain Update – 24 July – Let It Snow Please…..

Hi folks,For the first time in several years, we are facing a tough start to the season. As many of you will be aware, we are patiently awaiting more snow at Cheeseman so we can open. We have a thin base of snow over most of the mountain but unfortunately its still not enough to allow us to safely open the lifts and you favorite ski runs. The temps up here are cold but we still need in the region of 30 – 40 cms to open so at the moment its a waiting game we are playing with Mother Nature!

We have had to cancel the first couple of Ski Weeks, although a great bunch of clubbies still went up for the second week of the school holidays and to enjoyed an awesome alpine getaway. As they say, the worst day on the mountain is still better than the best day in town!

DSCN2118

Just enough snow on the learners area to build some jumps during week 2 of the holidays!

Our fantastic bunch of staff are still standing by and are just are eager as you to get the season underway! Many of them have been taking the opportunity to do some travelling and taking in some of New Zealands great outdoors and thanks to our Club members who have opened their homes to our staff as a place to base themselves from. This situation is not new to us and as a club we have been here before. There will be some of you who can recall the slow start to the season due to lack of snow in 2005 – it wasn’t until early August that we got a big dump and then it was all go!Everything is primed and ready to roll, all we need is the snow!

You can check in regularly to our snow report for further updates on snow and opening for the 2014 season.

We will keep you updated.

Cheers from Cam & the Cheeseman Crew

New Snow

Winter is back!

A total transformation occurred over the space of a few hours during Wednesday night / Thursday morning going from a very spring looking ski field to a winter wonderland once more! Thursday dawned with skies clearing and turned into a bluebird pow day – plenty of face shots were enjoyed by all. If ever there was a time to get up here its certainly now or over the weekend with a settled forecast for the next few days.

This Sunday we are looking forward to running the Canterbury Primary & Intermediate school races and the weather is looking good – more details below.

Some photos below of the new snow – pictures say it better that words!

Mountain Update – 22 August

Another week has quickly passed us by and I wish I could say we have had the big dump of snow everyone has be anticipating but unfortunately the storms cycles that had big promises have eventuated to little more than the odd snow flurry. We remain optimistic that we will still get some snow and in the meantime upper mountain coverage is still in reasonable shape and with continued maintenance T Bar 1 lift line remains open.

This week on the mountain we have enjoyed the company ski weekers on “Open Week” and yesterday we hosted a new corporate race event – Architects vs Engineers Race day which was enjoyed by 40 racers.

Coming up this Sunday we are running the Canterbury Primary & Intermediate Champs (further info below) and we will welcome in Ski Weekers on Family 1 week.

Ski In – Ski Out

We are nearly half way through August already – where do the weeks go? The past few days have been pretty busy on the hill as we crank through the events which began with Club Champs last weekend, Secondary School Racing on Tuesday and Accounts vs Lawyers corporate day yesterday! We have the final Club Champs race, the Slalom,  this coming Sunday at 10:30am along with race practice afternoon from 1pm which leads into the Primary & Intermediate School Champs on Sunday 25 August.

We’ve received a couple of further light dustings over recent days which has kept the snow pack freshened up and we are hopeful of a reasonable dump later this week – fingers crossed! The upper mountain is still in great shape and which daily grooming the main runs either side of the Main T Bar are popular. Upper mountain off piste still has good cover and whilst its a little firm early on by mid-morning most days its softened up nicely.

On Tuesday afternoon we commissioned the new Webcam so everyone is pretty stoked to see this running and now we have a good representation of the good upper mountain snow cover. Check it out at www.mtcheeseman.co.nz/weather/webcam/

Wellington Ski Weekers arrived on Sunday afternoon and have been enjoying the benefits of staying at Snowline Lodge for that true Ski In – Ski Out mountain holiday experience. With daily lessons, meals, accommodation, lift passes and much more as part of the overall package its a pretty hard deal to beat! We have a few spaces available on the next 2 Ski Weeks: “Open” (18 – 24 Aug) & “Family 1” (25 – 31 Aug) so why not come up and join us? Check-out Accommodation Options Here.

A reminder to Club Members that we are holding our Mid Season Meeting this coming Monday – More info on our Events Page. This is a chance to catch up on how the season has been going with reports from key staff & committee members and also a good opportunity for members to have their say.
