This is a full-time position in our busy Rental Department, so we need a passionate and dedicated person to kick things ticking over smoothly. Ideally you will have had previous experience although training can be given to someone who knows their way around skis and snowboards. You will be dealing one on one with clients so need a friendly and positive attitude along with a non-flustered approach to sometimes busy periods. You will also be required to help out in other areas of the operation as your skills dictate and should ideally have an instructors qualification NZSIA Level 1 (or equivalent) to be able to assist in the busy Ski School.
The world over instructors are the face of many ski resorts and it’s no different at Cheeseman! Dealing one on one with so many clients tends to make you someone who the clients will remember so we are looking for people with all the right ingredients and positive attributes to be an instructor at Cheeseman! Whilst snowboarding is still growing in popularity at Cheeseman we generally only employ 1 Snowboard instructor during the season so its an advantage to have a skiing qualification (even if its only level 1) on your list.

Dealing one on one with so many clients tends to make you someone who the clients will remember so we are looking for people with all the right ingredients and positive attributes to be an instructor at Cheeseman! As a minimum you must have NZSIA level one as minimum requirement (but preferably level 2) and minimum 1 seasons experience teaching / instructing within the ski industry. The ski school is a small tight bunch who help with many other aspects of the operation when lessons are quiet – these include setting up events, assisting in the ticket office, café or rental department and much more.
We have a Champion 720a VHP grader fitted with front mounted snow plough blade so preferably you will have operated a machine in snow clearing operations / mountain environment previously, although training is available. The role also involves daily road inspections (sometimes several a day), assisting clients who may run into bother on the access road either by getting stuck or with chain issues. We would also like someone with some mechanical aptitude who can help with general servicing and light repairs as they arise.
The Café is another extremely busy part of the winter operation and often the first place customers go to, for their coffee fix, when they arrive on the mountain! We serve barista coffee along with alcohol, light food such as pies, toasties, soups, muffins etc. so much of the preparation is heating prepared food although fresh muffins each day is a must! The position deals directly with visitors / guests face to face, many are repeat customers, so you’ll need to have a positive and personable attitude. You will also be responsible for your weekly order of product from suppliers in Christchurch, so stock management is important given our distance from town. Forward planning and looking at the events calendar is crucial to making sure stock levels are correct for week to week.
This position is a flexible role (Full-time) with timing being spent between the Ticket Office and Cafe as required or dictated by customer flows. You will be dealing directly with visitors / guests face to face in the ticket office and Cafe and using a POS based ticketing application. We are looking for a level headed person who is well organised and friendly and must be a team player. Barista training an advantage.
Another Key position within the operation is that of Ticket Office staff member/s. The Ticket Office is often referred to as the hub of the operation and is extremely busy at times handling customers, phone calls, emails and radio calls to the base area radio from other staff. Dealing directly with visitors / guests face to face, operating a POS based ticketing application along with answering all general enquires via phone, email and other social media is all in a day’s work. We are looking for a level-headed person who is well organised, friendly and must be a team player.
The Lodge & Guest Manager position is based in Snowline Lodge (our 69-bed accommodation Lodge). The position requires daily management of outgoing and incoming guests, day to day guest queries and dealing with any special requirements such as communicating dietary requirements of guests to the cook. The position is responsible for management of our online booking system, Check Front, and requires a high level of daily interaction via this system, emails and the phone.
Ski Patrol positions are high sort-after in NZ and Cheeseman is no exception. As well as general ski patrolling the role also includes assisting, at times, the Snow Safety Officer to run the Snow Safety programme, daily field set-up & pack-down, running the lifts, setting the hill up for events, dealing with accidents and medical evacuations etc. Previous experience is a must and Avalanche 1 Qualification is a requirement.
The Snow Safety Officer is responsible for running Mt Cheeseman’s Snow Safety programme and is an integral role of the winter operation. This position requires all avalanche mitigation has been carried out prior to opening the slopes for the day and is ongoing through-out every day of the season. It is a very Health & Safety orientated role and also requires active involvement on the Ski Patrol Team and general day to day operation of the ski area such as attending to accidents / medical requirements to running the lifts.
