The Book:

Tales of the adventures, drama and revelry these pioneering enthusiasts experienced as they overcame many obstacles to enjoy a few hours of skiing, ice-skating and tobogganing on the slopes of Mt Cockayne. As well as producing skiers of international calibre, the club discovered members with outstanding qualities of determination, enterprise and a capacity for having fun.How to extract a determined Kea from its occupation of the ladie's longdrop; how to extract husbands and fathers from the Sheffield Hotel; how to extract a bulldozer off the side of the road with ten disabled helpers, were some examples of situations which called for novel resourcefulness. The book draws on personal recollections from members past & present and the illustrations include images from the 1930s that have not been produced before.

300 Pages - Hardcover

Author:

Margaret Rich, whose family connections go back to 1933 with parents Jean & Ernie Rich. Margaret has spent the last 18 months researching and writing this history, which, she says "captures the sprit of Cheeseman past & present, and honours the individuals and their contribution to the club over its 75 years".

Quotes from reviews are:

"It is an immaculately presented hardcover volume on top quality paper, lavishly illustrated and well laid    out … This volume is no dry official history, but a lively account….I’m neither a skier nor a Cantabrian, but this book made me wish I was both"

(New Zealand Geographic May – June 2005)

" the over-riding feeling conveyed in the book is one of great fun.......I was fortunate to get the opportunity to review this fascinating and detailed history of skiing at Mt Cheeseman"

(The Climber - winter 2005 - James Broadbent )

" this is a book for all history buffs and those with an interest in skiing in New Zealand and the Canterbury region"

(NZ Outside Snow- winter 2005)

"a major contribution to the rather slim literature on one of the provinces most popular recreations... In its scope and production, it's a publication which would be hard to match for a jubilee history for any New Zealand sports club"

(Christchurch Star - March 2005 -Nick Tolerton)

"Margaret Rich's.. excellent history of the Mt Cheeseman Ski Club.... anyone with a curiosity about the development of outdoor pursuits will find joy reading this....highly readable. I advise readers to purchase one before the limited number of copies sell out"

(Quote from NZ Wilderness - September 2005 - Shaun Barnett)
